About 'the debt collection'|"Jersey Courts & The Debt Collection Racket"
In 2005, I had a Verizon Wireless cell phone in my name that I purchased for work. I hardly ever used the phone; my employer required that I have a cell phone that was in my name. I applied to the company's demands. I resigned at the end of 2006 for scholastic reasons. In 2007, I was looking for employment and my dad and I had limited money. As the cell phone bill could not be paid, I was charged a termination fee by Verizon Wireless. At this point, I had no idea what was happening. I just sheepishly followed the company demands and my father had paid the bill since I refused to pay a cell phone bill that I used for about 15 minutes per month. At this time, I did not know about paid-as-you-go plans. In November, I received a call from a debt collection agency. The representative disguised himself as a sales representative from Verizon Wireless. For the entire part of our conversation, I believed this male from this debt collection agency was from the billing department of Verizon Wireless. As I was caught completely off guard, I just listened to what he had to say. He basically threatened that Verizon Wireless would take me to court. I was thinking I must have been the only person to have ever missed a payment for Verizon Wireless. He then advised me that I let him talk to my father. My father knew more about the bill at that time, so I gave him permission. My father was not like me, so the debt collection agency representative was probably taken off guard when my father answered the phone and immediately realized the debt collection agency representative and his bad debt collection techniques. As I heard both sides from a different receiver, they threatened one another until my father mocked him and hung up. I had no clue knowing what just happened. I kind of felt bad for the debt collection agency representative that had to use those bad debt collection strategies for forty hours a week, but if one is willing to sell themselves out for a few extra dollars, then so be it. Have fun! Eventually, I got a job and paid off the termination fee. I learned that you should watch yourself with any debt collection agency and the bad debt collection techniques they use. I also realize that if I did some research on Verizon Wireless cell phones and learned about pay-as-you-go plans, this mess could have been avoided. |
